An unfortunate car accident occurred on Tuesday, March 3, 2009 in Lindenhurst, New York.

Russell Murphy, 53, co-pastor of Amityville Community Church, was involved in a car accident on Tuesday. On his way home, his automobile broke down on Sunrise Highway and he decided to leave it and walk home to his house on Albany Avenue in North Amityville. While on his walk at almost 11 p.m., a 1994 Buick allegedly hit Murphy in the westbound lane by Wellwood Avenue. Kevin Kreutzberg, 18, of Lindenhurst was driving the Buick. After the accident, Kreutzberg immediately dialed 911 and stayed with the pastor. No charges were filed against the driver.

After being struck by the vehicle, Lindenhurst Fire Rescue emerged and took Murphy to Good Samarian Hospital in West Islip. Doctors took care of Murphy and Murphey underwent surgery for his two broken legs. Murphy also had critical injuries in his shoulder, ribs, and lungs.

Murphy’s brother, Rick Shalvoy, believes that the incident was a terrible situation and that his brother is a magnificent person. Shalvoy established the Row for a Cure Fundraiser which raises money for breast cancer research. He also claims that Shalvoy has spent a great deal of time working with mentally challenged adults at Association for the Help of Retarded Children in Plainview.
